In Tucumán one of the biggest problem of pollution is generated by vinasse. This is a liquid residue left in the distillation of ethanol from sugar cane derivates, it has an elevated chemical oxygen demand (COD). For the successful of biologic anaerobic treatment applied to this effluent, it is important the study of the specific methanogenic activity (SMA) of different anaerobic sludges. These sludges contain many families of microorganisms, in special methanogenic microorganisms. Anaerobic sludges were tested at laboratory in small batches anaerobic digester, these sludge were from lagoons with vinasse, lagoon with food industry effluent and a biologic reactor. Methane production was measured by the displaced liquid method. The volumes measured at different days were used to calculate the maximum methane production rates. With those values the SMA of each sludge was calculeted. The results obtained in this study are in the range from 0.08 to 0.30 gCODCH4/gVSS/d. Although better values founded on literature are close to 2 gCODCH4/gVSS/d, in the province of Tucuman there are many sludges that could be used at biologic treatment.
