Resumen:
There a number of interesting challengesthat face those working at the interface between rheology and fluidmechanics.  Among the most pressing are:i. Determination of the elongational behavior of polymeric liquids in welldefined elongational flows.  ii.Devepolment of validation of constitutive equations for nonhomogeneous flowsthat are neither simple shear nor elongation. iii. Determination of the rheological behavior of polymeric liquids nearsolid boundaries and singularities.  iv.Understanding the interrelation between rheological properties of polymers andflow transitions in complex flows.  Muchof this agenda has been brought into focus by recent advances in the ability tocompute viscoelastic flows numerically, though the latter item has beenhighlighted primarily by the studies of flow through an axisymmetric abruptcontraction by Boger and coworkers and by our group.  In this wotk we look at the controbutions ofvelocity and stress measurements in complex flows of viscoelastic liquids towardresolving some of these issues.
