Sediment dischargeeventsinthelowerbasinoftheChubutRiver(Patagonia,Argentina)associated withrainfalleventsgenerateseriousproblemsfordrinkingwaterpurification ofmore than250,000inhabitantsandthesupportoflivestockfarmingactivityofabout42,000ha intheregion.IdentifyingtheareasofpotentialsedimentcontributiontotheChubutRiver andtheconditionsnecessaryforerosionandsedimenttransferisofvitalimportanceto mitigatethenegativeimpactofsedimentdischargeintotheriverandtoestablishwatermanagement plans.We conductedadetailedgeomorphologicalstudyina110km2 tributary watershedoftheChubut River(SagmatapilotBasin),andidentifypotentialsedimentproductionzones.Webased ouranalyzesonconcomitantstudiesthatindicatethatthesedimentremobilizationislinked tothelocationofthedrainagenetworks,especiallyinregionsassociatedwithbadlands anderosionalscarpsformedonPaleogenecontinentaldeposits.
