Coastalvegetationplaysanimportantroleforclimatechangemitigation.Comparedwithterrestrialecosystems,coastalvegetationshowshigherratesofatmosphericCO2uptakeandamoreefficientretentionofcarbon(C)insediments.SaltmarshespresentthehighestvaluesasCbinders,althoughaglobalestimationofthesevaluesisstillpendingduetoregionalgapsintherecordspredominantlyfromthesouthernhemisphere.Therearenoclearpatternsordominantprocesseswithenoughevidencetoaccountfortheobservedvariability,suggestingthatcontextdependentprocessesarelikelygreatestinfluencersonCstorage.SaltmarshesintheSouthWestAtlantic(SWA)coastaredenselypopulatedbytheintertidalburrowingandherbivorecrabNeohelice(=Chasmagnathus)granulata.ManyecologicalprocessesrelatedtoCtransformationoccurringinthesesaltmarshesareinfluencedbycrabactivities,eitherthroughbioturbationorviaherbivory.WehypothesizethatN.granulatacouldhaveasignificantroleinthecapacityofSWAsaltmarshestobindC.Reductionofplantbiomass,increasedaerobicdecompositioninthesedimentandfacilitationoferosionaresomeofthemultipleeffectsexertedbyN.granulatathatcandirectlyandindirectlymodifythecapacityofsaltmarshestobindC.Here,wecompiledinformationavailableregardingCsequestrationandaccumulationinSWAcoastalsaltmarshesandproposeahypotheticalmodelincludingthemechanismsmediatedbyN.granulatathatinterferethetransformationpathsofCinsaltmarshes.Thedatasuggestthatmechanismsthataretop-downregulated,negativelyaffectCaccumulationintheformofabovegroundbiomassespeciallyinsaltmarshesdominatedbySpartinaalterniflora.While,mechanismsmediatedbybioturbationcannegatively(increasingoxygenationandthusfacilitatingaerobicdegradation)affectaswellaspositively(increasingretentionofmacrodetritus)affecttheaccumulationofC,thelatterbeingofgreatermagnitudeinSpartinadensiflorasaltmarshes.
