Cotesia flavipes (Hymenoptera:
Braconidae) is used in several countries for biological control of the
sugarcane stemborer, Diatraea saccharalis
(Lepidoptera: Crambidae). Mass rearing of Cotesia
requires there be an improvement in the effectiveness of parasitoid rearing to
offset the time and financial investment in Cotesia
cocoon production. Specifically, our goals here were to evaluate the effect of the
number of inoculations made on Diatraea
larvae and evaluate the effect of host age on the emergence success, number of
emerged adults, and sex ratio of Cotesia.
Cocoon success from one inoculation was 8% higher than from two inoculations
(N=280 larvae), but this difference was non-significant for number of emerged
adults, females, and sex ratio. Cocoon success and number of emerged adults and
females was higher in larvae 18 and 19 days old (N=3646 larvae), but the number
of emerged females was affected by the number of inoculations. Sex ratio (M:F)
decreased from larvae 17 days old (0.59) to 21 days old (0.38), suggesting that
the maintenance of a female-biased sex ratio might present a trade-off with
higher cocoon production.
