The leaf morphology of 18 species of ferns are comparatively studied. The authortries to find the probable índicator value of each species for the different types of rock outcrops and stony soils.External characters, like inclínation angle of the frond, blade size, photosynthetic surface and morphological behavior during the dry period, are measured. Internal morphology, like stomata density and size, trichomes density and type, cuticule, epidermal cell walls and blade thickness and palisade-spongy chlorenchyma ratio are also indicated.As these features are assumed to be of adaptative value, because they vary depending on the humidity-dryness condition and pattern of the particular habítat of each species, the data are used to obtain an index called Drought Resistance Index (IRS).Finally, the ferns are grouped according to IRS and discussed according to thedifferent microhabitats where they are growíng,
