Resumen:
We report a scanning tunneling microscopy study of the growth of iron on Cu(111) using lead as a surfactant. In the absence of surfactant, iron on Cu(111) grows in the form of irregular three-dimensional islands with the bcc structure. Characteristic vacancy islands of removed Cu atoms in the substrate are visible, located preferentially close to the original steps, which are indirectly visualized by the decoration with iron islands. Instead, the growth of iron on Pb/Cu(111) resembles closely a layer-by-layer fashion. After the initial growth of one bilayer, triangular shape islands grow above it. At this stage the whole film is in the fcc structure, beyond it seems to be a combination of an fcc and a bcc structure. The (4 x4) superstructure is present at least up to 6 ML indicative of the segregation of lead to the surface, as confirmed with Auger electron spectroscopy. Expuso: PASSEGGI (Jr.), M.C.G.
