Resumen:
The ecology of the Lower Ebro River has been deeply modified by human influence over the past century. River water has been increasingly used for industrial processes, cooling of nuclear power stations, urban supply and agriculture, with no treatment of the effluents. Additionally , more than 100mreservoirs have been built  in the basin. river ecology changed further in the 1960s when a big dam, Mequinença, was built 100 km upstream from the Ebro Delta. Thus the river flow has become more regulated and water quality has worsened, with a large increase in eutrophication. The benthos of the estuarine reaches of Mediterranean rivers has not been studied. Data have usually been collected upstream from the zone affected by the salt wedge. Such information is also scarce in ther rivers like the Rhine. The purpose of this study is to analyze the variation of phsicochemical parameters and the zoobenthos biota oof the Ebro River.
