Resumen:
Human pharmaceuticals are compounds used primarily to prevent or treat human disease, include numerous chemical classes. They are generally excreted and emitted to the sewerage system following use. They have been detected in the natural environment across the world. The reported concentrations are generally low but some can persist in the environment for months to years. Concerns have therefore been raised over the potential effects of pharmaceuticals in the environment on human and environmental health. There have also been regulatory developments around the assessment of the risks of these compounds in the environment  (e.g. CDER 1998; CHMP 2006, 2008; ECETOC 2008; VICH 2000, 2004; WHO 2011).
