Resumen:
In this work the production of 1,2-propanediol via the hydrogenolysis of glycerol in vapor phase at atmospheric pressure is studied, over copper catalysts supported on mesoporous alumina, is studied. The aim of the present work is to analyze the effect of mesoporous alumina calcination temperature over the performance of copper based catalysts in the hydrogenolysis of glycerol. Mesoporous alumina was synthetized by a sol-gel method associated with a triblock no-ionic copolymer in ethanol. Once the alumina was synthetized it was calcined at: 600ºC, 800ºC and 1000ºC. Copper catalysts supported on mesoporous alumina were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation, keeping constant CuO content in 15wt.%. The textural characterization results showed that all the catalysts presented characteristically properties of mesoporous solids. The characterization results showed that the interaction between copper species and support diminished as calcination temperature increases. Based on the catalytic performance it is possible to conclude that acetol production increases with copper metallic area; whereas the major production to 1,2-propanediol is related to the presence of copper species with high interaction with the support.
