Resumen:
Ipomoea carnea (Convolvulaceae) contains swainsonine, an indolizidine alkaloid of fungal origin; this alkaloid is the primary toxin of the plant and results in neurological disorders in poisoned livestock. The objective of this research was to demonstrate the location of the epibiotic fungi in leaves of I. carnea, using light and scanning electron microscopy, both in cross section and superficial view. Histological analysis showed fungal mycelia near or around the glandular and non-glandular trichomes. In transversal sections of leaves, it was possible to verify the absence of hyphae in the interior of the leaves. We confirm the epibiotic presence of the fungus and lacks of hyphae colonizing the internal tissue in leaves of I. carnea, which has not been previously reported.
