In this paper we address the problem of designinga control and management plane for large packet switches. Inparticular, we consider the case where the forwarding plane isdistributed among several line cards interconnected through apassive optical fabric. The main contribution of the paper isthe discussion of issues arising when designing a unique andconsistent control and management plane, and the proposal ofa solution for the considered architecture. Finally, we considerthe case of building an Ethernet switch, discuss implementationdetails and describe the experimental setup used to validate theproposed approach.
