Multi-MetaRing Protocol: Fairness in Optical Packet Ring Networks

Single-hop wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) optical ring networks operating in packet modeare a promising architecture for the design of innovateMetropolitan Area Networks (MANs). They allow a costeffectivedesign, with a good combination of optical andelectronic technologies, while supporting features likerestoration and reconguration that are essential in anymetropolitan scenario. In this article, we address thefairness problem arising in a WDM optical network andpropose an extension of the MetaRing protocol to a WDMscenario. Our results show that both fair access and highaggregate network throughput can be achieved by properlyhandling access through all WDM channels.
