Resumen:
The abundance and taxonomical composition of the phytoplankton from the marine ice and water column was studied in the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, during the winter season (June-July 1999). The abundance of cells was low in the ice and in the water column. Nevertheless, an elevated diversity of species was found, with diatoms and phytoflagellates being the phytoplankton main components. The water column was dominated by phytoflagellates and the total cell concentration was of a magnitude order lower than during the summer. In the ice there were more diatoms than flagellates. From the different kinds of ice, the pack ice presented a lower abundance of cells and the ice pancake the highest. The phytoplankton community presented, in this area, taxonomic characteristics different to that mentioned for other zones of the Antarctic Ocean.
