The construction of hybrid materials from metal cations and organic multifunctional anions is an area of great activity. Open structures with pores of great size can be achieved in this way, with applications in the fields of catalysis and water sorption/desorption. They can also show interesting magnetic and optical properties, depending on the nature of the cation. The employement of polycarboxylates (flexible O2C(CH2)nCO2 chains) as the organic ligands is specially appealing owing to the versatility in the way they coordinate to the cation and their ability to act as hydrogen bond donors and acceptors.
