Resumen:
The hydration reaction of alpha-pinene is studied in trichloroacetic acid presence as catalyst focusing the study in the influence of operative conditions such as, molar ratio water/alpha-pinene, reaction time and stirring, on the distribution of products. An increase in the molar ratio water/alpha-pinene resulted in an increase of the alpha-pinene conversion an in the production of oxygenated compounds because the aqueous phase acts solvating charged species contributing to formation of polar compounds. The alpha-pinene conversion and the selectivity in alpha-terpineol increase with reaction time obtaining conversions of 34% for 180 min. The stirring favors noticeably the alpha-pinene conversion and the formation of oxygenated compounds. When stirring increases, the conversion is doubled and the selectivity is quadrupled.
