Resumen:
The effect of suboptimal temperatures on the growth of rice seedlings was studied. We determined the differences in leaf growth response between cultivars with contrasted tolerance against this stress. Different percentage of reduction of leaf elongation rate between tolerant and sensitive cultivars was already described in the third leaf. Here we showed that these differences were also reflected in the leaf elongation rate of the fourth leaf, so an analysis was done to shade some light on the cellular processes behind these responses. A dynamic pipeline model of kinematic analysis parameters of the fourth leaf growth, comparing control (24/28 °C) and suboptimal temperatures (13/21°C) conditions, revealed that each cultivar had a different strategy regarding the regulation of cell division and cell expansion in response to the stress. Although some similarities were found between the sensitive cultivars or the tolerant cultivars, it was majorly seen that each cultivar showed its own particular strategy. Besides, the structure of the leaf was also found modified in response to suboptimal temperatures stress. This research shows how working with more than one cultivar reveals strategies against an abiotic stress that otherwise could not be unravel when using only one.
