   Recent studies, with low-molecular-weight laminarans, fructans, dextrans and maltodextrins, illustrated the power of positive-ion mode MALDI-MS for defining the degree of polymerization profiles of polysaccharides. However, very few MALDI-MS analysis of oligosaccharides containing nitrogen functional groups have been reported.      Oligosacharides and polysaccharides are difficult to study by MALDI, partly because of the wide variety of structures available with different chemical functions and linkages. Thus, results can be erratic and difficult to analyze, indicating that there are still several experimental and instrumental factors that affect the molecular weight measurements (i.e. sample preparation method; matrix; mass analyser).
