Resumen:
Based on the theoretical model developed by Ajzen and Fishbein, it was predicted the individual’s intentions towards the behavior of confining an old person in a geriatric institution is a function of two components: a) attitudinal and b) normative. Measures of attitudes toward behavior, of subjective norms and behavioral intentions were carried out through a questionnaire, that was administrated to 170 subjects selected from the universe of middle socioeconomic level inhabitants of Buenos Aires (Argentina). The results revealed that it is probable that the subjects had a behavior that avoids the geriatric confinement. Their intentions of confining and old person in a geriatric institution turned out to be weak and the attitudinal and normative components that explain and predict their intentions reveal respectively that: a) the interviewed group posses unfavorable feelings towards the action of confining an old person in a geriatric institution, and b) the individual’s subjective norms denote that they perceive a social pression of disapprovement over them concerning the performing the studied behavior. The normative component contributes in a more relevant way than the attitudinal factor in the regretion ecuation to predict the intention.
