Annual changes of the algal density and the concentrations of chlorophyll a, total phosphorus and organic matter were analysed in the water column and sediments at four sites characterized by the presence or absence of submerged and emergent macrophytes in Lacombe Lake during turbid and clear water conditions to determine the contribution of algal components phytoplankton and epipelon and to identify the most typical species of each community. In the ecosystem, three states were recognized: one turbid and two with clear water (with different submerged macrophytes cover). The peaks of phytoplankton and epipelon were achieved in the turbid phase while in sediments the highest proportion of true epipelic algae was reached in the second clear phase. Temporal differences (among phases) were observed in the water variables, whereas spatial differences predominated in the sediments.
