At Vegas Peladas, four Neogene igneous units with a wide compositional range (gabbrodiorite to granite) intruded the Jurassic sediments causing a widespread metamorphic aureole, hydrothermal alteration (skarnification) and Fe mineralization. District-scale mapping of hornfels and skarn mineralogical zonations has identified gabbrodioritie as the parental pluton to the Fe skarn of the area. This pluton exhibits low SiO2, K2O and incompatible elements, but high MgO, compatible elements and magnetite, contents, similar to igneous rocks associated with world- class Fe skarns.
