Resumen:
This article studies the frontier region of the Argentine city of Corrientesbased on the concept of centre and periphery. It analyzes the level of autonomythis region obtained in all matters regarding its defense. The article focusses onthe way local authorities, indigenous groups, Jesuits and citizens of Corrientescontributed to the defense of the border. One important group were the miliciasguaraníes, combat units consisting of indigenous who were considered indiosamigos and therefore were allowed to carry weapons.
