Resumen:
Understanding how and when acute stressors modulate memory processescontinues to be a challenge. We have proposed that a function ofreconsolidation is to induce changes in the behavioral expression ofmemory by the influence of concurrent experiences, instead of itspotential to be reactivated. Here, we adapted the widely used inneuropsychological clinic Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test toevaluate the effect of the cold pressor stress (CPS) during thereconsolidation of this declarative memory. According to previousstudies on declarative memories, the working hypothesis of thepresent study was that CPS administered post-memoryreactivation-labilization will improve the long-term memoryexpression of this declarative memory. A decay in memory performancewas found at the time of memory reactivation (Day 6). Contrary to ourinitial predictions, the CPS administration during reconsolidationimpaired the long-term memory expression (Day 7), an effect that isdependent on the presence of a mismatch condition in the ReactivationSession. No differences in recognition tests were found. Resultshighlight the complex stress-memory relationships.
