Resumen:
When an animal rotates it produces wide field imagemotion over its retina, termed optic flow (OF). Imageshifts are stabilized by compensatory behaviorstermed optomotor response (OR) that, in crabs, consists both of body and eye movements. In thisstudy we tackled a major unanswered question incrustacean’s visual processing: which region of thebrain is the neural substrate for processing OF? Werecently described a crab’s lobula plate (LP) thatshares many morphological characteristics with thedipteran LP, that is known to process OF. We presenta functional evaluation of its role in OR by lesioningexperiments. The results present strong evidenceabout an evolutionary conserved site for processingoptic flow shared by crustacean and insects.
