Resumen:
Optical phenomena in materials have been used for nearly two centuries as a means to understand their composition and their behaviour, helping to establish the foundation for chemical design of novel nanosystems. A spectroscopic approach to address photo-chemical phenomena that occur during the processes of conversion of graphene oxide into graphene is discussed, which consists of a combined optical absorption/emission microscopy. In combination with traditional spectroscopic experiments, this tool proves to be a very powerful method to gain insight into the rich chemistry of carbon based nanomaterials. The photochemical processes that take place in the conversion of graphene oxide into graphene prove that these chemically exfoliated 2-D materials are inherently unstable towards photo-oxidative damage due to the abundance of oxygen bearing functional groups in their basal planes.
