Resumen:
A hybrid control strategy is proposedin this paper to overcome severe hypoglycemia problemsin closed-loop insulin delivery. An insulin bolusis administered prior to the meals like in open-loopcontrol, whereas an adaptive PD controller is used forglucose regulation. The controller gain is adapted bymeans of a variable structure algorithm, avoiding anexcessive accumulation of active insulin. The robustperformance of the control algorithm is intensively assessedon a cohort of virtual patients under challengingrealistic scenarios considering mixed meals, circadianvariations, time-varying uncertainties, discretemeasurement and actuation, sensor errors and otherdisturbances.
