Resumen:
This one-day field trip focuses on the Ediacaran – early Cambrian metasedimentary strata of the Puncoviscana Formation and the Cretaceous/Tertiary continental sandstones and shales of the Salta and Choromoro groups. These sedimentary sequences cropout on San Javier range, 11 km to the west of the main plaza of Tucumán. The Puncoviscana Formation (s.l. ) represents the basement of the whole sedimentary succession in the Lower Paleozoic Central Andean Basin, while the Salta and the Choromoro groups stands for outstanding K/Paleogene and Cenozoic continental units in NW Argentina. A gentle geological field tour will be driven visiting different touristic localities as Villa Nougués, San Javier and Las Tipas. Nearby geology, sugar cane fields, summer houses, a waterfall in the rain forest and outstanding sights will contribute to a pleasant field trip.
