The
extremely acidic Lake
Caviahue (pH= 2.2)
(glacial volcanic origin) shows three groups of sediments (pH= 2.7) according
to Fe, Al, Ca and S contents. The main P-fraction is linked to Al and Fe. This
pattern is quite different to the P fractions that are found in sediments of
neutral lakes mainly dominated by calcium. The high sulphur concentration could
be important to sustain P in solution in the water column.
