Resumen:
Taxonomic features of Panicum obtusum, a species ranging from Southern United States to Central Mexicoand previously classified in subg. Agrostoides, sect. Obtusa of Panicum, are reviewed and compared with othertaxa in the tribe Paniceae. The species is transferred to the new genus Hopia on the basis of morphologicaland molecular characters. Affinities of the new genus with other genera of Paniceae are discussed
