Resumen:
The aquatic environments of Patagonia are particularly prone to UV penetrationbecause of their geographical situation as well as their high transparency and turbulencecaused by wind (Morris et al., 1995 and references therein; Zagarese et al. 1998). Somecomponents of the biota of patagonian lakes such as phytoplankton, zooplankton and fishspecies bear behavioral and physiological adaptations that prevent and/or counteract thedamaging effect of the high-UVR environment (Villafañe et al. 2001, Zagarese andWilliamson, 2003; Rocco et al; 2002; Zagarese et al. 1997 a and b; Zagarese et al. 1998;Battini et al.2000; Neal et al; 2003 ). The synthesis or acquisition of UV-protectivecompounds (carotenoids and mycosporines like aminoacids) that act either as sunscreensor antioxidants has been reported for several planktonic organisms of patagonianfreshwaters (Villafañe et al 2001; Rocco et al. 2002; Goncalves, in press and referencesin these publications)
