Conservation of Valuable Grassland Areas (VGAs) in the Rio de La Plata Grasslands (Argentina, Uruguay and Southern Brazil)

CONSERVATION OF VALUABLE GRASSLAND AREAS (VGAS) IN THE RIO DE LA PLATA GRASSLANDS (ARGENTINA, URUGUAY AND SOUTHERN BRAZIL)   CONSERVACIÓN DE ÁREAS  VALIOSAS DE PASTIZAL (AVPS) EN LOS PASTIZALES DEL RÍO DE LA PLATA (ARGENTINA, URUGUAY Y SUR DE BRASIL)   SUMMARY The Rio de la Plata Grasslands (RPG; 750,000 km2) are the main complex of temperate grassland ecosystems in South America, including the pampas and campos of central Argentina, Uruguay and Southern Brazil. The aim of this paper is to introduce an inventory of the Valuable Grassland Areas (VGAs) that have been identified in the RPG and to report some of the ongoing actions and future directions for the conservation of temperate grasslands in this region. The 42 VGAs which have defined limits within the RPG sum up 3,570,000 hectares, or 4.7% of the total area. The area covered by all the VGAs  is at least 10 times greater than the area actually covered by protected areas in the region. About half of the VGAs are totally or partially overlapped with existing protected areas. There is still a considerable potential for the conservation of pampas and campos in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil by both the creation and/or enlargement of existing protected areas. Moreover, half of the VGAs are in private lands, reinforcing the idea that the ranching community has a crucial role in grassland conservation.     RESUMEN Los Pastizales del Río de la Plata (750,000 km2) constituyen el principal complejo de pastizales templados de América del Sur, e incluyen las pampas y campos del centro de Argentina, Uruguay y sur de Brasil. El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar el inventario de Áreas Valiosas de Pastizal (AVPs) identificadas en los Pastizales del Río de la Plata, y de algunas de las acciones de conservación en curso y programadas para la conservación de los pastizales en al región. Las 42 AVPs que cuentan con límites definidos en la región suman 3.570.000 ha, lo que representa un 4,7% de la superficie regional. Esta área es al menos unas diez veces mayor a la que cubre el actual sistema de áreas protegidas. Existe aún un considerable potencial para la conservación de pampas y campos en Argentina, Uruguay y Brasil, ya sea tanto por la creación o la extensión de las áreas existentes. La mitad de las AVPs se solapan total o parcialmente con tierras privadas, cual indica que la comundad de productores ganaderos tiene un papel crucial en la conservación de los pastizles.
