Interspecific hybridization has been widely recorded in Prosopis, a key genus of the Gran ChacoAmericano. Here, we performed a cytogenetic study in a hybrid zone of Prosopis alba, P. hassleri, and P. fiebrigii in Formosa province. We characterized pure species karyotypes and putative hybrids using fluorescence banding. Two cytotypes were identified, one corresponding to P. alba and another corresponding to P. hassleri and P. fiebrigii; the hybrids presented cytotypes of P. alba or P.hassleri/fiebrigii. All the studied morphotypes presented the same karyotypic formula and the samenumber of nucleolar organizing regions. The high chromosomal similarity among different species of the genus reinforces the idea of a relatively recent diversification of Prosopis, which would allow continuous hybridization and introgression between species.
