Explotación de depósitos secundarios de rodados en el curso medio del río Negro y el litoral marítimo pampeano

This paper presents a study of the exploitation of cobbles in the Río Negro Valley in northern Patagonia and on the maritime coast of the Pampas in Argentina.  Based on geological data and samples from secondary deposits, a general scheme about their distribution, availability, and types of rocks represented is presented. As follows, we present the main technological patterns observed in the worked cobbles, emphasizing the possible correlation between the form and size of the cobbles with the methods used in reduction of cobbles. Finally, evidence from this analysis is compared with evidence originating from other neighboring regions where cobbles were also used in the manufacture of lithic artifacts (e.g., the northern Patagonian coast and the lower valley of the Río Colorado).  In accordance with these results, we propose that prehispanic hunter-gatherers made distinct decisions in the manufacturing process of lithic artifacts in relation to the differences in the original form of the cobbles.
