Resumen:
Engine valve manufactures have to satisfy the demands of a market that requires to increase the dependability of their products and to extend the lifetime of engine components. In an engine valve, mechanical stresses during the closing event are generated by elastic loads coming from the return spring preloading, inertia loads of spring, retainer, keeper and valve masses, and thermal loads caused by temperature gradients. The objective of this work is to understand the valve seating process, and to predict numerically the maximum stresses in new valve designs, inshorter times and at lower costs compared with experimental procedures. The stress response in valve stem along the seating event (including impact and rebounds) was registered using strain gauges and then compared to Finite Element Method solutions, showing good agreement.
