Resumen:
This essay presents a criticism of the idea of "the civilizing force of hypocrisy" regarding the action of strategic argumentation. Firstly, I characterize the act of argumentation in general and those values in which this action is based. In order to do this, argumentation is compared with negotiation, and strategic and authentic argumentation are distinguished. Secondly, I address the so called principle of "the civilizing force of hypocrisy" trying to establish the kind of justificatory reason it supplies. Thirdly, I briefly analyze the notions of hypocrisy and egoism that define strategic argumentation. In doing so, I show the contrast between these disvalues and those values that, by hypothesis, the action of argumentation in general exhibits and honors. This analysis gives support to the conclusion that justifying strategic argumentation on the basis of "the civilizing force of hypocrisy" is paradoxical because it justifies egoistic and hypocrite acts flouting the very values that argumentation is thought to fulfill and reassure.
