Resumen:
Phacepholis Horn is a lineage of the Pantomorus-Naupactus complex (Entiminae, Naupactini) that evolved in North and Central America independently from the species traditionally assigned to Pantomorus Schoenherr. It includes 13 species, five distributed in North America, and eight in Mexico and Central America. The North American Phacepholis were revised by Lanteri in 1990 and they are as follows: Ph. elegans Horn, Ph. candidus Horn, Ph. obscurus Horn, Ph. planitiatus (Buchanan) and Ph. viridis (Champion). The Mexican-Central American species are as follows: Ph. globicollis (Pascoe), Ph. brevipes (Sharp), Ph. trituberculatus (Champion), Ph. albicans (Sharp), Ph. viridicans (Sharp), Ph. strabo (Sharp), Ph. howdenae Lanteri & del Río new species (type locality, Zacapa, Guatemala) and Ph. burkei Lanteri & del Río new species (type locality, Guerrero, Mexico). Phacepholis annectens (Sharp) is a new junior synonym of Ph. brevipes (Sharp) new synonymy. Lectotypes are designated for Pantomorus brevipes, P. annectens, P. trituberculatus, P. albicans, and P. viridicans. Among the eight species of Ph. globicollis species group, six species are endemic to Mexico and two, Ph. strabo and Ph. howdenae, range in Central America. The Neotropical Phacepholis mainly differ from the Nearctic species because they are larger, with longer antennae, the pronotum of males is more convex, and the spermathecae subglobose instead of globose. In this contribution we provide descriptions or redescriptions of the eight species of Phacepholis from Mexico and Central America, a dichotomous key for their identification, habitus photographs, line drawings of male and female genitalia and distribution maps.
