Resumen:
One-thirds of the Earth'secosystems are closely linked with grass-dominated vegetation. The evolutionaryhistory of this ecosystem can be understood by comparativa studies of thebiotic component, but a paleontology approach is necessary to the majorunderstanding of these evolutionary processes. The different methodologiesapplied in paleoagrostological studies are detailed in the presentcontribution; with special emphasis of phytolith analysis application inpaleograsslands reconstruction. Paleobotanical and palynological backgroundrelated to the South America Cenozoic paleoagrostology are summarized, and thedifferent topics of these studies implementmg at the present time in theTertiary and Quaternary sediments of Argentina are described.
