Researchersperfoming routine sediment análisis are frecuently confronted by the problem ofchoosing the best mathematical technique to evaluate the size frecuencydistribution. The efficacy of different parameters calculated using (1) momentmeasure equations, (2) Folk and Ward?s equations and (3) Inman?s equations, todiscrimate 61 samples of river bed sediments, previously classified by means ofcluster analysis, was statistically tested. The results show that, although thethree methods successfully predicted more than 90 % of the samples, the momentmeasures were more effective than the graphic methods to describe the sizefrecuency distribution because the former involve a summation over the entirefrecuency range whereas the latter are only an approximation of a continuousdistribution
