Phytoplankton studies have been carried out in Potter Cove (Fig. 1) sinceNovember 1991, in the frame of the CS-EASIZ Programme. Several hydrographicand meteorological parameters have been measured while phytoplankton wascontinuously sampled. Some experimental work was done in order to understandthe relationship between dynamic processes in the water column and biologicalvariables. Spring-summer and winter seasons were both considered. Although partof the results were already published (see Klöse et al. 1993 and 1994,Anonymous, 1994, Schloss, 1997, Schloss et al., 1997, where all the methodswere described) here we will do an attempt to summarise some aspects of theabove mentioned information, and try to explain the trends observed and factorsgoverning phytoplankton variation.
