Resumen:
Many references can be found On the study of Krill and research On this dominating species of the Antarctic waters has been conducted from a rnultitude of scientific angles. However when one wants to cornpose a cornplete picture of the life history and ecological significance of Krill the pieces of the puzzle have to be derived frorn data of different areas and different seasons and years. During the EPOS leg 2 cruise, research was conducted along a transect frorn the Weddell Sea pack ice well into the Open Weddell-Scotia Sea Confluence waters during a period of 7 weeks, which perrnitted us to follow the surnrner developrnent of the Antarctic pelagic ecosystem. Investigations were conducted On hydrography, chernistry and all levels of the food web, offering an ideal opportunity to sketch a cornplete Krill picture frorn one continuous data Set. In this paper we sumarize EPOS data on growth, sexual development, respiratory activity, grazing, silica uptake, rnigratory behaviour and schooling and rnatch this with the background of the vast arnount of literature available.
