Resumen:
Phospholipases A (PLAs) and lysophospholipases (LPLs), are a ubiquitous and heterogeneous group of enzymes that participate inmultiple physiological processes and regulate several critical cellular events. Detection of phospholipase A1 (PLA1) andphospholipase A2 (PLA2) activities has been observed in a wide range of organisms and are regarded as true virulence andpathogenic factors in diverse microorganisms. This chapter gives an overview of the current knowledge on PLAs, LPLs, and otherrelated enzymes of diverse protozoa and helminths, relevant for medical parasitology, based on the research conducted to dateconcerning biochemical, biological, immunological, and molecular characteristics, and their effect on disease pathogenesis.
