Electrochemical based-biosensors have distinct advantages compared with others based on alternative technologies (e.g. fluorescence) since on the one hand the generated signal is a current, without the need of further transduction, and the energy needed to feed the device is based on the same technology; for example, substantial efforts are made to use species present in the body as fuel and oxidizer (glucose and oxygen), to generate electrical energy through biofuel cells.In the last years, our laboratory has approached different working schemes to improve the limit of detection of biosensors and improve the current generation of biofuel cells by manipulation of the size at the molecular level of key component of the device or improving the interaction of different components involved in the electron transfer process.In this conference we will discuss how the architecture of different devices at the molecular level can help to improve the signal generation, the limit of detection and the power output in biosensor. These results show alternative routes for the size reduction and improvement of the limit of detection by adopting simple pathway in the construction of these systems.
