Seasonal hydrologic variations in the La Plata basin from GRACE gravity models

Seasonal hydrologic variations in the La Plata basin from GRACE monthly gravity field models for a time span of 5 and a half years, have been determined. The results has been compared to gauging data along several rivers of the La Plata basin. At several gauging stations, both signals are characterised by strong seasonal component, which has been estimated by classical least squares and also by different robust adjusments. As for the results, high correlations appear in the northwest basin, where the gauge and GRACE seasonal fittings represent the annual hydrological cycle. By the comparison of the phases, we have detected some days of time delay between GRACE data and gauging data, which is an indication of the delay between precipiation and the subsequent runoffs.
