Resumen:
Pseudalopex culpaeus is the largest member of the genus. P. culpaeus is distinguishable from other species in the genus with overlapping or adjoining ranges by its larger size and reddish coloration of the head, neck, ears, and legs, and white to light-tawny chin. Furthermore, L. gymnocercus has a shorter, wider rostrum and more uniform pelage, L. griseus and L. sechurae lack the interparietal crest, and in the latter there is little or no rufous coloring on the body and the palatine bones extend backwards beyond the posterior edge of M2. The culpeo fox inhabits semi-desert Andean prepuna, mediterranean scrub and grassland, and woodland areas of western and southern South America. Its range extends from northern Ecuador to southern Chile and Argentina, along the foothills of the Andes, including Tierra del Fuego, and throughout the Patagonian steppe of Argentina.
