Resumen:
Eutrophication constitutesone of the main problems in water quality, especially in bodies of water usedas sources of drinking water supply. The main cause of eutrophication lies inthe contribution of nutrients that reach the recipient body from the basins, increase its productivity and cause negative effects such as toxic algalblooms. In recent years, theapplication of numerical water quality models has been a useful tool forassessing and predicting environmental problems such as eutrophication andconsequently for the management of water resources. In general, these modelsare preceded by hydrodynamic modeling. In this work, thetwo-dimensional numerical model MIKE 21 is applied to the San Roque reservoir(Córdoba, Argentina) to study and evaluate the dynamics of hydrodynamic andwater quality variables associated with eutrophication processes and floodevents in the January-April period of 2017. Hydrodynamic variables suchas speed and water levels, and biological water quality variables such aschlorophyll a, and inorganic variables such as dissolved oxygen, phosphorus, and nitrogen were modeled, evaluated and assessed. The results show the effectthat flood events have on the spatial and temporal distribution of thesevariables. The model presents a goodperformance with respect to the hydrodynamic and inorganic water qualityvariables with errors below 10%. However, a lower adjustment of the biologicalwater quality variables is observed.
