Resumen:
This study investigates through laboratory experiments and numerical simulations the flow processes that occur near the banks in a section of a curved channel. The simulation were carried out with a three-dimensional model of Detached Eddy Simulation (DES).The results of the numerical simulations adequately predict the distribution of mean surface velocities and the observed flow separation zone in the experiments results. The model allowed to describe the flow, turbulent structures, and shear stress on the boundaries at a level of detail that exceeds what is possible from physical experiments. Distributions of predicted transverse velocities and vorticity in cross sections reveal a centre region cell of secondary flow induced by streamline curvature, a counter-rotating outer bank cell of secondary flow and a zone of reversed streamwise vorticity near the edge of the zone of convex bank flow separation.
