Resumen:
The goal of this paper is to provide a preliminary characterization of the Nivaclé (Matacoan-Mataguayan, Argentinean and Paraguayan Chaco) determiners na, xa, ka and pa. Based on my own fieldwork, I argue that (i) Nivaclé determiners do not encode definiteness; no deteminer choice is induced by a novel/familiarcontext, (ii) Determiner choice in Nivaclé relies on the speaker?s beliefs only. In this vein, it can be posited that Nivaclé determiners cannot access the common ground, and (iii) I propose that speaker knowledge (used to characterize na, xa and ka) should be replaced by visual evidence, while deictic information helps tease apart the use of na (spatially present) from the use of xa (spatially absent/distal). In sum, I propose that Nivaclé determinersencode both evidential and deictic notions.
