Resumen:
The drag force on a particle close to a planar solidifying interface was calculated and analyzed by means of a numerical model. The Navier-Stokes equations were solved employing finite element methods and the drag force on the particle was integrated from the fluid flow fields. The drag force was calculated for different interface velocities, particle radius and particle-interface separation distance. The results were compared with the values given by the Stokes and the Modified Stokes equations. The results indicate the range of validity of the Modified Stokes equation and the validity of the model calculations for the Stokes approximation. In addition the drag force was compared with the repulsive Van der Waals force leading to a steady state of pushing and the relation between separation distance with particle radius and velocity was established. The separation distance obtained with this models result smaller than that predicted by the Modified Stokes equation.
