Hybrid materials combine in a synergistic mode the best of two worlds: that of macromolecular soft matter and that of dense ceramics. Although hybrid materials are known since ancient times, nowdays different synthesis strategies are elaborated for an efficient combination of these two worlds.
In this talk I will present the main properties of hybrid materials and the general synthesis pathways. I will discuss some particular examples taken from mother Nature, such as nacre and coccoliths, and the biomimetic approach for obtaining new hybrid functional materials.
I will emphasize the role of synthesis conditions for tuning porosity in order to have optimal conditions for transport of nutrients and metabolic products.
Applications to bio remediation, biotechnological reactors and photosynthetic reactors will be discussed
