Challenges in the synthesis of nanostructures with tuned optical response

Composite nanostructures involving mesoporous materials are known to present specific optical responses that can be exploited for diverse applications. The design and synthesis of these complex systems involve a fine kinetic control to achieve a stable state with the needed properties.Here I will discuss the mechanism involved in two systems based on mesoporous silica particles (mSP). (i) mSP decorated with TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) for enhanced photon harvesting and (ii) core-shell Au@mSP for photothermal conversion.In both cases our aim is to disentangle the role of synthesis parameters in order to open new synthetic pathways for tailored materials.
